Karolyn was trained both at the Ackerman Institute for the Family in New York and at the Institute for Family Therapy in the UK. She holds an Msc in Family and Systemic Psychotherapy, an MA in Social Work, a Postgraduate Diploma in Family and Systemic Psychotherapy and an Advanced Award in Social Work.

Before moving to the UK, Karolyn lived in India and New York. This has enriched her practice when working with different cultures and communities.

Karolyn’s practice is based on the belief that people can change. She draws upon a range of approaches such as Systemic Psychotherapy, which considers the patterns that are created in our lives and the influence this has on the past and it’s impact on the present. She uses a Cognitive Behavioural approach, which tries to break down problems into smaller parts by helping one change how they think and behave. She also uses Solution Focussed Therapy, which focuses on using the clients own strengths to create and find solutions rather than solely focussing on the problem.

In New York, Karolyn’s experience included working at a hospital within a multidisciplinary team with children who had developmental difficulties including Autism. She has worked at a Paediatric Haematology/Oncology Unit with children suffering with cancer using art therapy activities within a group setting. She has also offered counselling to Holocaust Survivors who have suffered severe posttraumatic stress.

In London, Karolyn has worked with Looked After Children and their carers for a Local Authority and for the last seven years she has been employed at a Family Centre offering therapy to parents, families, children and young people. Part of her work currently consists of providing a therapeutic service to Children and their families in a school.

Karolyn has trained in the Webster Stratton Parenting Group and the Strengthening Families Strengthening Communities Parenting Program, which she has run.

Karolyn is a member of the Association of Family Therapy and is also a Registered Member of the United Kingdom of Psychotherapy. She abides by the code of ethics of both organisations.
